Coronation of the Virgin Mary |
Português
The Virgin Mary was
conceived naturally, by her parents, but miraculously without the original sin
that configures all the rest of humanity in our "time". She was planned from all eternity to conceive Jesus, the
Son of God, and to provide Him with the elements of his human matter. Like
“Eve”, who also did not have original sin (before she committed it), Our Lady
had free will and accepted, of her own accord, the mission that was proposed to
her.
Given her status as mother
of God, the Church logically assumed that she could not be subject to the
original guilt or corruption of her body. Therefore, the conclusion reached is
that, necessarily, the Assumption of Mary occurred. This was established as a
dogma of faith by the Catholic Church. However, it is not known whether she
died and was immediately resurrected and raised to Heaven, or if took place
what the early Christians called "dormition" followed by assumption.
In 1950, Pope Pius XII
declared: “Finally the Immaculate Virgin,
preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and
soul into heavenly glory, and
exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more
fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death”.
There were signs and
apparitions to confirm this; among others, Pope Pius XII (1939-1958) wrote
that, in 1950, walking in the Vatican gardens, on the eve of proclaiming the
Marian dogma of the Assumption, he witnessed the “miracle of the sun” , the
same phenomenon which took place in Fatima.
On the feast of the
Assumption of Our Lady, we contemplate the promise of our own destiny, if we
also choose to join Christ.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray
for us who have recourse to thee!

The Song of Mary recited or
sung by the Virgin in response to the greetings of her cousin Elizabeth, when
Mary went to visit her:
Luke 1, 46-55:
My soul
proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit
rejoices in God my Savior,
for he
has looked with favor on his humble servant.
From this
day all generations will call me blessed,
the
Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is
his Name.
He has
mercy on those who fear Him
in every
generation.
He has
shown the strength of his arm,
he has
scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He has
cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has
lifted up the humble.
He has
filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has
come to the help of his servant Israel
for he
has remembered his promise of mercy,
the
promise he made to our fathers,
to
Abraham and his children for ever.
