Last Sunday's Gospel, about the Transfiguration of Jesus, it is impressive (St. Matthew, 17: 1-9). The description of His face shining like the sun and his clothes that became white as light, then the cloud that enveloped them, the voice... I heard this Gospel so many times in my life, and now it seemed like new.
The
Father Paulo Ricardo's explanation is great. Jesus showed Himself glorious,
talking to Moses and Elijah about His “departure
from Jerusalem”, that is, His death (St. Luke, 9: 28-36). Peter
wished to immortalize that moment, rejecting the idea of Jesus death, so he wanted to set up tents for Jesus and the other two men. When he
was saying that, they heard the voice of God literally enveloping them like a
cloud, and telling them to listen to Jesus; Peter, John and James fell down on
their faces, in fear. After soothing them, Jesus told the disciples not to tell what
they had seen, before He rose from the dead. Father Paulo Ricardo explains that
Jesus wanted to show His glory that would come after suffering (link at the end,
in Portuguese: O Tabor é uma preparação para o Calvário).
After Mass, returning from
the church, on the road, the sun was still high on the horizon, dazzling my
eyes, its reflection spread in the wide pools of frozen water on the asphalt,
disturbing my vision. I drove the car with great difficulty.
