It is amazing to see the church almost full on Ash Wednesday, during morning mass, which is usually attended by very few. All went humbly to receive the sign of their finitude.
In the Mass homily, the priest said something that we know, but given the tendency of human beings to repeat mistakes, it is good to hear the lesson again. He said Adam and Eve were tempted to want to be like God. He explained: to want to be like God is to think that we don't need God, that we can make our own rules, determining what is right and what is wrong.
In other words, that's what humanity is tempted to think, isn't it? That one day, with development, with the advance of "science", humanity will be able to solve all the problems, right? And that we are able to know what is good and what is bad for us, to make our own laws. That's the original sin... to think that we can do without God. Voila.
I think I don't need to explain why I put "science" in quotes, I'm someone who has always been involved in "science", in the deepest molecular mechanisms of life (Oncology/Chemotherapy). For this very reason, I am aware of our shortcomings, our limitations.
Yes, we must continue to make the greatest efforts to progress in science, out of love for others and for ourselves, to improve the human condition. But let's not have the childish idea that we can solve everything.
We will return to dust... wise liturgy that stamps this truth on our foreheads, every year.
Beyond this limit, only with God.
