Notre-Dame in Montreal |
I learned not long ago that St. Francis of Assisi, despite living and advocating a life in poverty and simplicity, determined for his community that the Blessed Sacrament should be placed in a precious, richly decorated place. He left this determination in his will. With Jesus really present in the guise of bread and wine, St. Francis believed that everything that contained the Eucharist must be worthy of a King.
I have already criticized the rich ornamentation of the churches, but I understand, today, that he was right. Not only chalice and tabernacle, also may the whole temple be a reflection of our worship and dedication to God, where the Peace of Christ is with us, and where we are enlightened by the Holy Spirit.
I have doubts about the use of churches for shows, when they are still the House of the Lord, an increasingly frequent custom in recent times. Especially according to the content of those spectacles, wouldn't it be equivalent activities of the "Temple merchants and money changers" that Jesus expelled? Of course, if the event consists of worthy presentations, and if the church is in need of financial help to survive, I think it's reasonable, but always after consulting the local Diocese.
I have added, below, useful links to support my text and for us to reflect on the subject.
