When I saw the images of the
Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris in flames, I could not help but see an emblem. Immediately,
some metaphorical associations have come to my mind: the decadence of the
Catholic Church, the decline of faith throughout the world, and Holy Week
beginning with a sad event like this.
I had a shock, just like
everyone, even non-believers. The cathedral is a patrimony not only of the Catholic
Church, of France, also Europe, Western Civilization, and the whole
humanity, in short. History, architecture, culture, an entire legacy was
burning before our eyes.
Fortunately, later, French
media informed the world of the excellent and risky tactics Parisian
firefighters had performed, which allowed them to preserve much of the
construction. In the first few minutes everyone wondered where firemen were. We
could not see them because they were inside the building. They began to fight
the fire inside, because if they did it from outside, they would throw the
flames inside, according to the news.
As there was no imminent
danger of collapsing the entire structure, they risked starting inside, before
attacking the fire from the outside. In addition, they have teams organized for
each task: to evacuate people, to protect the works of art, etc, etc, and had
done simulation exercises a few days ago. Bravo! (link to the news at the end
of this text).
So, with the structure that
remains, I imagine that the Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris can be rebuilt.
Obviously, it will not be as before, but will continue to exist, to the relief
of all of us.
I hope that, like the
cathedral, the integrity of the Catholic Church, undermined by cases of
pedophilia, among others, over the years, will also be rebuilt. And may it
start from inside. No need to try to find excuses outside for the evils gnawing inside! Let the "firemen" of the faith, led
by Pope Francis, continue their strategy to eliminate the evil that is
ingrained in the clergy, so that the whole structure does not collapse.
That bright and very visible
Cross on the photos inside the Cathedral is calling us to reflection during
this Holy Week.
