Divine omniscience

Português

Regarding Holy Week, I was reading a text about Judas' betrayal. The author mentions certain erroneous interpretations, such as the idea that Judas was predestined, as if forced to do what he did. This misinterpretation stems from a misunderstanding of the meaning of prophecies, including Jesus' prophecy moments before the betrayal.

Or rather, it stems from a lack of understanding of what divine omniscience is. It is very difficult to comprehend what omniscience is, because we are incapable of experiencing it, but there is a way to do an exercise in imagination, albeit in a very rudimentary way, since we only have a very vague idea; nobody really knows what it is like. It reminds me of what I myself wrote once.

Do you remember the old tapes, with those little squares showing each movement, frame by frame? Looking up to the light, we could see various sequences, sliding the strips, following them with our eyes to see the whole movie.

God can see, or rather, He knows the tape of the entire universe, of all times, past, present, and future, as if He were looking at everything at once, always. As if, for Him, all this movement were static, in a tiny instant. His "gaze" encompasses everything at the same time. There is no before and after, as there is for us, who perceive everything in a confused way.

Jesus knew that Judas would want to betray Him and that he actually would.
